EPBD: new rules for bike parking

The directive (EU) 2024/1275 requires bike parking for at least 15% of average or 10% of total user capacity of non-residential buildings and 2 spaces per dwelling in residential buildings; for new buildings and major renovations it also wants ducting for later e-bike charging. National rules set the details. Plan a protected supply and a place for the station together with the bike spaces. EPBD requirements, calculator and checklist →

Placement

What to plan so the place passes inspection and satisfies the insurer

Electrical

  • A separate circuit with its own protection
  • A 30 mA residual current device (RCD)
  • A central shut-off for the charging point
  • By analogy with IEC/HD 60364-7-722 (charging point as a separate circuit)

Space

  • Number of bike spaces under the applicable rules (EPBD: 15% of average / 10% of total capacity)
  • Away from escape routes and sleeping areas
  • A non-combustible surface and distance from combustibles
  • Smoke or heat detection and a suitable extinguishing agent
  • Outdoors at least IP54, ideally under a shelter
Standards to reference in the design

IEC/HD 60364-4-41, IEC/HD 60364-7-722, EN 15194, EN 50604-1, national fire safety standards; in Germany also VdS 3103.

Tender documents

Sample tender text

The text describes functional requirements. Adapt it to your project.

Charging station for e-bikes and light electric vehicles:
– at least 6 DC charging outputs for 24/36/48 V batteries, of which at least 5 outputs at 4 A and 1 fast output at 10 A,
– 2 AC sockets for original chargers,
– bike connection with magnetic connectors to IEC (EnergyBus), cables for at least 14 connector types,
– protection rating at least IP54, vandal-resistant construction, wall or stand mounting,
– remote management: access control, monitoring of status and usage, data export,
– compliance with European safety standards (EN / IEC), documentation for inspection.
